Glasshouse Gardener

Opportunity:The Horticulture department is seeking a Glasshouse Gardener. The candidate will be exposed to the many facets of conservatory plant care in a public garden setting. The Glasshouse Gardener will work closely with the Senior Horticulturist along with other Garden Horticulture team members to assist in the care and maintenance of Costa Rica and Madagascar Biomes. This position is based at the Cleveland Botanical Garden campus in Cleveland, Ohio.

Position Details:

  • Non-Exempt, Part-Time Position
  • 20 hours/week schedule. Mondays and mornings are required
    • Specific schedule within these parameters can be discussed with individual applicants.

Key Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities of the Glasshouse Gardener include but are not limited to:

  • Support Holden Forests & Gardens’ mission, vision, and values
  • Support the maintenance of all biome plants through tasks including watering, planting, deadheading, pruning, fertilizing, mulching, staking, litter removal, etc.
  • Provide daily exhibit maintenance including hosing pathways and clearing leaves.
  • Assist with the monitoring plant health and scout for pests
  • Apply pesticides and release beneficial insects as needed using IPM practices.
  • Help with labeling plants in beds through label creation, placement, and maintenance
  • Participate in public speaking as well as act as an ambassador by interacting with guests during programming
  • Provide guidance and instruction to glasshouse volunteers
  • Provide support to the Senior Horticulturist, Animal Care Specialist, and other Horticulture staff as assigned
  • Assist with the install and de-install of semi-permanent shows/displays
  • Takes direction and follows through with assignments and works well independently
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Demonstrate a passion for people and nature
  • Demonstrated interest in horticulture
  • High school diploma, or equivalent, preferred
  • Ability to understand basic instructions is required
  • Strong, proven ability to work independently without direct supervision once trained
  • Strong communication, organizational skills, adaptability, and critical thinking skills, highly desired
  • Able to work well in a diverse team
  • Must be able to follow multistep directions and work independently
  • An interest in working indoors and outdoors performing manual labor in all weather conditions
  • A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and ability to participate within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Proficient use of Microsoft 365 products, specifically Teams, Outlook (email and calendar), Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • A valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record of under 3 points

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires work that takes place both indoors in a humid glasshouse and outdoors where the ambient temperature spans 0-100 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Hand and arm dexterity
  • Comfortable standing on elevated platforms, ladders, and aerial lifts elevated up to 30 feet above the ground. Training provided
  • Walking and working on wet, uneven, slippery terrain
  • Carrying up to 50 lbs. on a repetitive basis daily
  • Kneeling, bending, stooping, grabbing, and reaching
  • Ability to walk an average of 3-5 miles per day in variable terrain; occasionally more
