Guy Maddin’s hallucinatory, hilarious second feature is set in a remote northern Russian town at the end of WWI. A one-legged Canadian soldier, his memory destroyed by mustard gas, mistakes a local woman, Veronkha, for his dead love. But Veronkha’s husband also suffers from amnesia. This comedy of confused identities is rendered in stunning retro visuals; it looks like a b&w Soviet silent classic—but with surreal details (bunnies falling from the sky) too loopy for Lenin. Cleveland revival premiere. DCP. 83 min.
