We Tip our Badge to You for Academic Excellence - De'Sir Jones

UCPD has started a wonderful police scholastic outreach program called “We Tip our Badge to You for Academic Excellence” in collaboration with the Mary McLeod Bethune School. Every two weeks, a student will be recognized for doing something special and will be nominated by the school. It could be a good report card, winning a science fair or spelling Bee, having a great math test, or just being a kind student or friend to others.

The student will get a signed UCPD certificate from the Chief, a UCPD challenge coin and patch, and a gift card at a local UCI restaurant. This program will help us build long-term bridges of trust and develop generational relationships with young people and their families. We hope this effort will have recruitment potential and maybe one of our winners will grow up to become a UCPD police officer one day.

Our first recipient was De’Sir Jones. On January 31, 2024, Officer Gloria Mercado and Chief Wetzel stopped and recognized De’Sir in front of his class. His fellow students applauded him as we presented his award.

De’Sir Jones is an 8th grader and when he grows up, he wants to be a professional football player (QB). His favorite teacher is Mrs. Price and his favorite subject is math. His favorite food is shrimp and his favorite color is purple. In his spare time, he enjoys games and playing with his little 4-year-old brother Carter.

UCPD is so proud of De’Sir and all the students at Mary McLeod Bethune School.
