The Music Settlement adds assets of El Sistema@University

Posted September 18, 2014 in Press Releases

Cleveland, OH, Sept. 18, 2014 –The Music Settlement announced today that it has absorbed the assets of El Sistema@University and is offering scholarships to former El Sistema students to continue the effort of that organization.

El Sistema@University Circle has transferred its assets to The Music Settlement. In return, The Music Settlement has developed a new Sistema Scholars program, which will provide music-education opportunities to former El Sistema students and other children from low-income communities.

“This agreement ensures a continuation of intensive musical instruction for students who were enrolled in El Sistema programming,” said Charles D. Lawrence, President and CEO of The Music Settlement. “We look forward to working with El Sistema’s former faculty, partners, and donors in serving underrepresented communities.”

Two programs founded by Isabel Trautwein, El Sistema@University Circle and El Sistema@Rainey provided after-school orchestra training in inner city locations.

“I believe that The Music Settlement shares El Sistema@University Circle’s aspiration to help children who have found a home in orchestral music to pursue continued musical training,” Ms. Trautwein said. “Likewise, transferring our assets to TMS will help children from all backgrounds receive the high-quality musical training necessary to place them on the youth-orchestra stages of Northeast Ohio’s great institutions.”

“We are always interested in speaking with potential partners around Cleveland to develop unique programs that serve our communities,” Mr. Lawrence said.

The Music Settlement has hired Ms. Trautwein, violinist for The Cleveland Orchestra, to direct its Advanced Chamber Orchestra from the concertmaster’s chair. She and other members of The Cleveland Orchestra will form a quartet at TMS called CORE: Cleveland Orchestra Residence Ensemble. Advanced string students interested in auditioning for Advanced Chamber Orchestra should contactjrhodes@themusicsettlement.org.

The Music Settlement’s full course catalog is available online at www.TheMusicSettlement.org/resources.
