A struggle between light and darkness that ends in hard-won triumph, Schumann’s Second Symphony sounds like the composer’s valiant attempt to will himself back to health after a severe depressive episode: “I was certainly much better when I finished the whole work,” he wrote. Daniel Harding returns to lead the Orchestra in this poignant symphonic favorite, as well as an elegant Haydn symphony and the Sinfonia No. 2 by the late, great American composer George Walker.
