In 1983, 10 years after the Endangered Species Act was signed into law, artist Andy Warhol created a series of screenprints in an effort to raise the profile of endangered animals and draw public attention to their plight. Endangered Species features portraits of 10 animals in peril, depicted in Warhol’s bold signature style.
Donated to the Museum’s fine arts collection by Cleveland philanthropists Robert S. and Sylvia K. Reitman, these screenprints are one of only 150 sets created by the Pop Art icon. As of today, seven of the 10 highlighted animals remain at risk of extinction.
See Andy Warhol's Endangered Species in the reopened Corning Gallery, a new home for rotating exhibits that highlight the intersection of art and nature. This exhibit is included with general admission.
Gallery talks: 2pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays
