University Circle Inc. Becomes University Circle Alliance, Building on Decades of Partnership

After nearly 70 years of working alongside the district’s institutions, businesses, civic partners and community members, the Cleveland nonprofit is changing its name to reflect how those partnerships have grown.
CLEVELAND, OH (October 14, 2026)—University Circle Inc., the nonprofit that works to strengthen Cleveland’s University Circle, is now University Circle Alliance (UCA). The new name builds on decades of work with the institutions, businesses and residents who shape the district.
Heidi Hudak, chief marketing and experience officer at University Circle Alliance, revealed the name Wednesday at State of the Circle, a public event at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
“University Circle has always been shaped and strengthened by institutions, neighbors and partners, long before anyone put a name on it,” said Kate Borders, president, University Circle Alliance. “This name reflects our role alongside them, and our commitment to keep growing together.”
This evolution has been decades in the making. University Circle Inc. began with land acquisition and development, and its work alongside the district’s institutions and neighbors laid the groundwork. As that foundation took hold, shared work and experiences moved to the center of its effort, a direction confirmed by a community listening tour in 2023.
The new logo carries the same idea forward. Both the University Circle and University Circle Alliance marks draw inspiration from a DNA double helix, transformed into the interlocking UC and UCA letterforms. The design reflects the building blocks of the district—arts, culture, education, health and community—and the connections among them, a visual reminder that the relationships at its core came first.
That story starts in 1957, when the organization was formed as the University Circle Development Foundation to carry out the district’s master plan. Its first job was land. It assembled parcels so museums, universities and hospitals could grow, then added the shared services that made the district work for the people who used it: public safety, parking, and shuttles.
In 1970, the organization became University Circle Inc. and looked outward to the neighborhoods around the Circle. It worked with local groups on housing and, in 1973, launched a Community Education Program to connect Cleveland’s schoolchildren to the district’s resources. That focus on people alongside place set the course for the work underway today.
Today, University Circle is home to roughly 28,000 employees and 7,500 residents and draws millions of visitors each year. With much of the physical groundwork established, UCA is building on that foundation and deepening the partnerships that make the district a destination. That work is already visible:
-
Connecting the Circle: UCA is advancing a long-range public realm master plan to link major destinations and improve public spaces including Wade Oval, Euclid Avenue, the Cultural Corridor and East 105th Street, with the goal of making the district welcoming to neighbors as well as visitors.
-
Opening doors with the Harrison Dillard Trail: UCA is leading community engagement, fundraising and additional studies for the trail’s improvement in partnership with the City of Cleveland. The trail runs from the lakefront through the Cultural Gardens and University Circle, and the work pairs infrastructure planning with outreach to connect neighborhoods such as Glenville, Hough and St. Clair Superior to the lakefront and to the Circle.
-
Wade Oval Wednesdays: UCA’s well-known summer program continues to build community partnerships. Last summer, and again this summer, the Cleveland Botanical Garden opened the Kohl Gate off Wade Oval for two evenings, giving visitors free access to the gardens and glasshouse. The two organizations co-promoted the nights.
“From the trail to Wade Oval, partners have carried this work for decades,” Borders said. “We’re exploring new ways to bring people together across the Circle and the neighborhoods around it, and we’ll keep building with the same people who got us here.”
