University Circle Inc. Earns Bicycle Friendly Business Designation by the League of American Bicyclists

Posted August 07, 2018 in Press Releases

Cleveland, OH (August 7, 2018) – The League of American Bicyclists, a national bicycling and advocacy organization of nearly 20,000 members, has recognized University Circle Inc. (UCI) with a prestigious Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB) certification.

With the announcement of 64 new and renewing BFBs across the country, UCI joins a growing list of 1,250 local businesses, government agencies, and Fortune 500 companies leading the way to transform transportation, health, and wellness for the betterment of U.S. workers and local communities.

“We are very proud to have received the Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Business (BFD) certification from the League of American Bicyclists,” says Chris Ronayne, President of University Circle Inc. ”We work hard to ensure that the University Circle neighborhood is a safe and welcoming place for bicyclists and a big part of that is encouraging our employees to use alternative modes of transportation. It’s wonderful to be recognized for our efforts.”

BFB requirements identify incentives, programming, and amenities proven to enable and inspire more people to ride bikes. UCI encourages biking by providing a shower for employee use, a company bike fleet, regular meet ups for employees to bike to work together, a subsidy for annual bike share memberships for UCI employees, and a monthly cash-out program for employees who choose alternative modes to get to work. In addition, UCI offers secure bicycling parking for all employees and visitors.

According to Annie Pease, UCI’s Transportation Manager, the most significant action taken by the UCI in the past year was launching the uGO initiative which supports mobility to and around University Circle through multi-modal travel. “That’s the direction transportation is going,” she says, “and it’s great University Circle is taking a lead in Cleveland. People like having options for getting around. Feeling safe biking as well as being supported by your work environment is a huge part of that.” In the coming year, UCI plans to coordinate advocacy for better bike infrastructure around University Circle and expand bike parking both in University Circle and nearby neighborhoods.

University Circle Inc. and other businesses and nonprofits have access to a variety of tools and technical assistance from the League to become even more bicycle-friendly. To apply or learn more about the BFB program, visit the League online at www.bikeleague.org/business.
