Wednesday, December 17, 6:30 pm MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIAN UK, 1979, Terry Jones "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy!" Brian Cohen is an average young Jewish man, but through a series of ridiculous events, he gains a reputation as the Messiah. When he's not dodging his followers or being scolded by his shrill mother, the hapless Brian has to contend with the pompous Pontius Pilate and acronym-obsessed members of a separatist movement. Rife with Monty Python's signature absurdity, the tale finds Brian's life paralleling Biblical lore, albeit with many more laughs. The film was widely controversial on release, banned in some countries for blasphemy, but became a cult classic and a touchstone for comedic subversion of religious authority. Make it a double-feature with Monty Python and the Holy Grail playing the same night! 94 min. Wednesday, December 17, 8:30 pm MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL UK, 1975, Terry Gilliam & Terry Jones King Arthur, accompanied by his squire, recruits his Knights of the Round Table, including Sir Bedevere the Wise, Sir Lancelot the Brave, Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-As-Sir-Lancelot and Sir Galahad the Pure. On the way, Arthur battles the Black Knight who, despite having had all his limbs chopped off, insists he can still fight. This endlessly quotable non-stop gigglefest about the filthiness and absurdity of the Middle Ages never fails to put smiles on the audience’s faces. Make it a double-feature with Life of Brian playing the same night! 91 min. Admission for each film is $12; Cinematheque members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, and 25 & under $9.
