“La Distancia” is a functional sculpture by Edra Soto that weaves together cultural memory, identity and everyday life that will be unveiled September 18 in front of the MetroHealth Glick Center in Cleveland’s Clark-Fulton neighborhood. Addressing the complex intersectionality of migration and diasporic identity, the sculpture will be a permanent installation in Clark-Fulton—home to the city’s highest concentration of Puerto Rican and Latinx residents. Taking the form of a bus shelter, “La Distancia” serves as a functioning RTA public transportation stop and a repository of stories from the neighborhood’s residents.
Soto's talk will take place during Lunch on Fridays from 12:15 to 1:30pm Friday, September 19 in CIA's Peter B. Lewis Theater.
This edition of Lunch on Fridays is held in partnership with The Sculpture Center.
Speaker Bio
Edra Soto is a Puerto Rican-born artist, curator, and educator who explores themes of identity, displacement, and the process of finding and creating home. Through visual art, community projects, and architectural intervention, Soto encourages a deeper understanding of our cross-cultural dynamics and how we collectively shape the spaces we inhabit.
Parking
Lunch on Fridays attendees may park in CIA's Lot 73 and Annex Lot, both of which surround our campus. Please note that signs posted around those lots correctly state that parking typically requires a CIA permit or visitor pass and that violators will be ticketed. However, to accommodate our valued Lunch on Fridays attendees, that policy won't be enforced during the program. Have questions?
