Award-winning contemporary novelists Jesmyn Ward and Colson Whitehead each examine how American history, life, and violence affect Black girls and women. Ward's novel, Salvage the Bones, looks at the reality of poverty in rural Mississippi in the face of Hurricane Katrina while Whiteheads's novel, The Underground Railroad, follows a slave woman's journey to freedom via the Underground Railroad. These novels will be read and discussed in this upcoming course you won't want to miss.
