Construction begins on Euclid Beach carousel restoration project
The Western Reserve Historical Society held a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday afternoon for the Euclid Beach carousel restoration project.
Construction is set to begin on an all-glass pavilion that will house the carousel.
Work to restore the original carousel is already under way with the company, Carousel Works, based in Mansfield.
The $2 million project, which includes building the glass pavilion, restoring the carousel and placing it in the pavilion, is expected to be finished in late 2013.
The Euclid Beach Park Carousel Society and Euclid Beach Park Now, both non-profit groups, are working on the project to restore the original Euclid Beach carousel. It will be housed at the Western Reserve Historical Society History Center in University Circle.
The Euclid Beach Park Grand Carousel was built by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company in 1910. It ran at Euclid Beach until the park closed in 1969, then operated at an amusement park in Maine for 28 years.
Cleveland’s Trust for Public Land bought the 58 carousel horses and two chariots in 1997. Cleveland Tomorrow raised money to have those items restored and some are currently on display at the Western Reserve Historical Society.
