The Cleveland Museum of Natural History, founded in 1920, is located in the heart of University Circle, five miles east of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Considered one of the finest institutions of its kind in North America, the Museum offers an incredible visitor experience, attracting roughly 300,000 visitors a year. There are more than 140 public education programs and over 80,000 students served annually. The Museum employs about 116 people.

Building on its strong foundation of excellence in education and research, the Museum is poised to transform itself. The Museum will invite and engage a broader audience in the exploration of science and the natural world by revolutionizing the way it presents natural history. The Museum has launched a capital campaign to support a dramatic renovation and expansion of its facilities and exhibits. This ambitious plan will position the Museum to play a leading role in regional and national efforts to improve science education and increase scientific literacy.

Job Summary: The Network and Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, installation, configuration, and maintenance of information technology systems at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. These systems include servers, operating systems, networks, data storage, applications and associated services both on-premises and in the cloud. They utilize best practices to deliver a robust, stable, secure, and integrated computing environment. Additionally, they develop, maintain, improve, and ensure the proper functioning of the Museum’s data network. The Network and Systems Engineer works with vendors, clients, carriers, and technical staff on network implementation, improvement, and ongoing management.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Design, installation, configuration, and maintenance of servers, storage systems, and workstations.
  • Documentation of devices, systems, processes, procedures, and maintenance for computer systems and Meraki network infrastructure.
  • Design, implement and support hybrid and cloud-based storage solutions.
  • Design, implement and support data backup solutions and help develop disaster recovery solutions.
  • Supervise helpdesk staff and manage a ticket system; provide regular ticket system reports to be used to create plans to optimize the end user experience; oversee the creation of an internal knowledge base.
  • Implement security protocols and procedures to prevent potential threats.
  • Assess existing network services, operating systems and security programs.
  • Design, implementation, and support of hosted and cloud solutions.
  • Support for Microsoft related technologies: Windows Server, Office 365, Exchange 365, SharePoint, etc.
  • Support for Hyper-V virtualization technology.
  • Monitor system availability and troubleshoot and resolve connectivity interruptions.
  • Remote access solution design, implementation, and support.
  • Communication with staff as required: keeping them informed of incident progress, notifying them of impending changes, or agreed outages.
  • Document and maintain internal processes and procedures related to duties and responsibilities.
  • Supervise Multimedia Audio Visual Services Technician.
  • Builds and maintains vendor relationships, working to secure best value equipment and services.
  • Responsible for cybersecurity training and reporting.
  • Remain up to date with current and future technologies emerging in the industry.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of coordinating aspects of large and small-scale projects.
  • Experience with all aspects of end user support in complex environments.
  • Experience with Microsoft Domain Administration, O365, Azure, SharePoint
  • Passionate about working with museum members, an interdisciplinary professional team, the general public and providing excellent internal customer support.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively about proposed initiatives and develop and execute solutions.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate and track multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize, work well under pressure with a high degree of accuracy, maintain excellent attention to detail, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to provide guidance and direction to peers and end users, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas both verbally and non-verbally so others will understand.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or related field; five to seven years of experience and/or training; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5-7 years of experience operating in a senior desktop support capacity with Active Directory administration.
  • Experience utilizing Power Shell, Power BI, and Cloud Experience
  • 5 years of experience with Microsoft Windows Server preferred.
  • 5 years of experience with network infrastructure preferred.
  • Meraki experience a plus
  • Linux Experience a plus
  • Microsoft Certificate professional, MCSA / MCSE in Server Infrastructure would be a plus but not required.

Physical Requirements

  • May require sitting, walking, standing, reaching including stooping, kneeling, and crouching for extended periods of time.
  • May require lifting objects that weigh up to 50lbs.
  • Must be able to run or respond to emergency situations.
