The Heart of Cleveland, a newly restored 1924 silent film commissioned by the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company in which two Ohio farm kids fly to Cleveland and see what electricity can do, will receive its Cleveland revival premiere at 6:30 pm on Friday, September 30, at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. New Hampshire-based silent film musician Jeff Rapsis will provide live keyboard accompaniment. The film was recently discovered at Cinecraft Productions in Ohio City.

This 29-min. historic movie will serve as a “curtain raiser” for the evening’s main event, a 35mm film screening of Erich von Stroheim’s 1924 silent masterpiece Greed, an unsparing account of how the love of money destroys the lives of three friends in 19th-century California. Based on Frank Norris’ novel McTeague and widely regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time, Greed will also be presented with live musical accompaniment by Jeff Rapsis.

The double feature of The Heart of Cleveland and Greed constitutes the Cinematheque’s contribution to 2022’s Silent Movie Day, which is officially on September 29 but the Cinematheque had a prior sound-film commitment that day.

The program will show in the Peter B. Lewis Theater of the Cleveland Institute of Art, 11610 Euclid Ave. Tickets cost $15; $12 for Cinematheque members, CIA and CSU I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under. Moviegoers are required to wear face masks when the CDC’s Community Level for Covid in Cuyahoga County is HIGH. The current level can be found at cia.edu/covid.

Free parking for filmgoers in available in Lot 73 and in the Institute’s annex lot, both located off of E. 117th Street south of Euclid Avenue. Entrance to the building is through Entrance C, off Lot 73. For further information, call 216.421.7450, visit cia.edu/cinematheque, or send an email to cinema@cia.edu.

Cinematheque programs are generously supported by a grant from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture. The Heart of Cleveland is shown courtesy of the Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington, DE, and has been restored with a grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation.
