The Cleveland Museum of Natural History, founded in 1920, is located in the heart of University Circle, five miles east of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Considered one of the finest institutions of its kind in North America, the Museum offers an incredible visitor experience, attracting roughly 300,000 visitors a year. There are more than 140 public education programs and over 80,000 students served annually. The Museum employs about 116 people.

Building on its strong foundation of excellence in education and research, the Museum is poised to transform itself. The Museum will invite and engage a broader audience in the exploration of science and the natural world by revolutionizing the way it presents natural history. The Museum has launched a capital campaign to support a dramatic renovation and expansion of its facilities and exhibits. This ambitious plan will position the Museum to play a leading role in regional and national efforts to improve science education and increase scientific literacy.

Job Summary: The Database Administrator provides sustainment support for the organization’s Constituent Relationship Management (CRM) system and interconnected applications as well as the Museum’s Research and Collections databases. The Database Administrator’s primary focus is on data integrity, internal help desk support, data clean up, and report management. They are responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the Museum-wide data integrity plan and supporting data governance.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Administers and oversees all components of the database, including but not limited to set-up, structure, security, processing, and functionality.
  • Support all users’ utilization of the CRM database and collections databases.
  • Continuously monitors and ensures data integrity. Review and update standard data entry operating protocols. Update and create documentation as needed.
  • Establishes training protocols by role, and works to establish continuing education and refresher programs for database users.
  • Coordinates the creation and maintenance of stable reporting and metrics by collaborating with each department to review and develop strategic solutions to unmet data and reporting needs.
  • Utilizes data visualization software to enable data driven decision making.
  • Provides technical consultation on projects involving databases; functions as lead staff in database software evaluation; works to improve the organization’s processing capabilities by assisting with identification and testing of relevant new products and applications.
  • Collaborates with vendor representatives as required.
  • Provide general helpdesk support as part of the Digital Technology team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or Museum management.

  • Proficient in working with relational databases, excel and reporting tools.
  • Exceptional critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of coordinating aspects of large and small-scale projects.
  • Experience with all aspects of end user support in complex environments.
  • Passionate about working with museum members, an interdisciplinary professional team, the general public and providing excellent internal customer support.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively about proposed initiatives and develop and execute solutions.
  • Ability to provide guidance and direction to peers and end users, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas both verbally and non-verbally so others will understand.
