The Cleveland Museum of Art has plucked its new curator of Indian and Southeast Asian Art from the San Diego Museum of Art, where she has served as curator of Asian art for the past eight years.
Sonya Rhie Quintanilla, who earned a PhD. in art history at Harvard, and who studied the Cleveland collection while earning her doctorate, starts work here Sept. 12.
“I have to say, it’s something of a dream job for me,” Quintanilla said Wednesday by phone from San Diego.
She said she considers the Cleveland collection of South- and Southeast-Asian art “really No. 1 overall” among all art museums in the U.S.
“The whole history of South- and Southeast-Asian art can be told with the Cleveland Museum of Art collection,” she said.
