Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in University Circle

Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in University Circle!

Beginning January 16 and running throughout the week, many of University Circle's museums and institutions will offer free or discounted admission, and special activities to commemorate Dr. King. 

On Monday, January 18, Univeristy Circle Inc. will provide a FREE shuttle bus to take visitors to the participating organizations in University Circle from 10:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. The shuttle will stop at the Cleveland History Center, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Botanical Garden, The Cleveland Orchestra (Severance Hall), Cleveland Public Library, Martin Luther King, Jr. Branch; and MOCA Cleveland.

The Cleveland Orchestra
36th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Concert

The program features music by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Duke Ellington, Camille Saint-Saëns, William Grant Still, and John Williams, as well as traditional spirituals and gospel songs.  Violinist Hannah White, first place winner in the Junior Division of the 2015 Sphinx Competition for Black and Latino string players, will perform as soloist, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Chorus will also participate.

Church of the Covenant
A Tribute to the Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Church of the Covenant welcomes Mr. Lowell W. Perry Jr. and the Cleveland School of the Arts' R. Nathaniel Dett Concert Choir, director, to the 10:00 a.m. service of worship. The Church of the Covenant Choir will combine with the R. Nathaniel Dett Concert Choir from the Cleveland School of the Arts under the direction of William Woods and Matthew Garrett, Jonathan Moyer, organ. Mr. Perry, who will be preaching, is Director of the Cleveland Central Promise Neighborhood, a collaborative effort modeled after the Harlem Children’s Zone and designed to elevate educational and development outcomes in Cleveland’s Central neighborhood.

Join us for a musical celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with vocal and instrumental performances by faculty members and students. This concert will be preceded by a student Voice Recital at 2 pm in the Faculty Lounge. Both events are free and open to the public.

The Power of Words and Expression: Celebrating the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Visitors of all ages are invited to participate in a day filled with activities honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Enjoy hands-on family art projects, gallery activities, Art Stories, the museum’s Art Cart, and live performances in the atrium. We're revving up for a great day of discovery! Curators will talk with guests outside of their labs and show specimens that are not usually on display. Visitors can enjoy mini Shafran Planetarium shows for just $1 per person and participate in amazing demonstrations with scientists and students from Case Western Reserve University. Guests can meet Cleveland’s neighborhood wildlife in special live animal presentations, and make a craft to take home in Smead Discovery Center on our lower level.

The Cleveland Orchestra
Community Open House

Performances and family activities will take place throughout the day. Performances by the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus, El Sistema@Rainey, Duffy Liturgical Dance Ensemble, the Distinguished Gentlemen of Spoken Word, and the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra will take place in the Concert Hall.  Family activities include the “I Have a Dream” Wall in Smith Lobby, and DJ Terry Macklin will be in the Bogomolny-Kozerefski Grand Foyer with music and line dancing.

31st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Program

Cleveland Public Library honors Dr. King's life and legacy at the 31st Annual Commemorative Celebration. The keynote speaker is Reverend Dr. Jawanza Colvin of Olivet Institutional Baptist Church. Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation, featuring Bryan Stevenson

Social justice visionary Bryan Stevenson, described as “America’s young Nelson Mandela,” will present the keynote address at Case Western Reserve University’s annual MLK convocation. A MacArthur fellow and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, Stevenson is considered a leader in the movement against mass incarceration in the United States. He recently served on President Barack Obama's task force on 21st-century policing.
